Lactoferrin, a multifunctional cationic iron-binding glycoprotein, is constitutively synthesized by exocrine glands and by neutrophils following induction. The multitargeting functions of Lactoferrin can be dependent or independent from its iron-binding ability.

Although Lactoferrin is classified as dietary supplement, a critical point is that commercial Lactoferrin preparations suffer from a lack of standardization, often resulting in an endless debate on its actual efficacy.

Since 2017 onwards, the Lactoferrin Conference has pointed out the importance of quality standard assessment for commercial Lactoferrin products in terms of iron content, integrity, glycosylation pattern, presence of isoforms and contaminants. This topic will be also critically discussed during the 2025 Conference.

One of the main aims of the 2025 Conference will be to better disclose the molecular mechanisms at the base of Lactoferrin functionality, as well as to discuss about the clinical outcomes.

A lively discussion will greatly contribute to increase Lactoferrin potential therapeutic applications on human and animal health and wellness.

HISTORY.

The International Conferences on Lactoferrin Structure, Function and Applications are held every two years: in Hawaii (USA) in 1993 and 1995, Le Touquet (France) 1997, Sapporo (Japan) 1999, Calgary (Canada) 2001, Capri (Italy) 2003, Honolulu (USA) 2005, Nice (France) 2007, Beijing (China) 2009, Mazatlán (Mexico) 2011, Rome (Italy) 2013, Nagoya (Japan) 2015, Rome (Italy) 2017, Lima (Perú) 2019, Beijing (China) 2021 and Rome (Italy) 2023.

Since 1960’s, when the protein was first isolated both from human and bovine milk, the number of publications on lactoferrin structures, biochemical properties and biological functions is significantly increasing.

At the beginning of 2025 the total number of international papers concerning different activities of human and bovine Lactoferrin in native and recombinant form is around 10,522 with a high increase in the last years. There are more than 100 registered clinical studies worldwide.

In the past three years, more than 90 papers have been published concerning the role of lactoferrin and its peptides against SARS-CoV-2, of which 60 papers are reviews or commentary. It is notable to underline that only few papers have unveiled the molecular mechanisms in in vitro study and the efficacy toward COVID-19 in clinical studies. Of note, concerning the clinical studies, only 4 reported the efficacy of Lf against COVID-19, while in the other 7, Lf has been tested as biomarker of a disease.

About the Abstract:
• Indicate the type of presentation you want to submit: Oral, Poster or Commercial Exhibit.
• The abstract must be submitted in English
• Do not use capital letters, except at the beginning of sentences, of proper names, or when absolutely required.
• Indicate the title of the presentation in less than 25 words.
• Indicate the names of authors (surname and first name) in full and separated by a comma. Put “*” after the name of the corresponding author. For example, three authors: “Weyland John*, Rossi Mario, Whatcott Andrew”.

STUDENT AWARDS

The Genevieve Spik Awards will be chosen and given to the best students from their submissions and reports. The winners selected among qualified Students/Post-doctoral Fellows under 35 years old will receive a sum intended to cover the accommodation fees for 4 nights in the Host Hotel and/or to reimburse registration fee https://mylactoferrin.org/#awards.

Applicants are invited to submit an abstract for an oral presentation to be given during the Conference. Applicants are requested to fill in both the Electronic Registration Form and the Abstract E-form.

Caution: the birth date of the applicant must be indicated in both Abstract and Registration Forms. Moreover, they must forward by e-mail (nidialeon@uas.edu.mx) a photocopy of the page of their passport displaying their photo, surname, first name, birth date, etc.

In addition to the Abstract Submission, a short letter from the applicant’s Supervisor is requested. The Supervisor is asked to provide a brief synopsis of the applicant’s overall contribution to the work being presented, as well as a summary of the resources available for the applicant’s attendance at the Conference.
